Keane exits Spurs for Liverpool

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on July 29th, 2008

Irish striker Robbie Keane has completed his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Liverpool.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy told the club’s official website: “I was incredibly disappointed when I first heard, not only that Liverpool had been working behind the scenes to bring Robbie to Anfield, but that Robbie himself wanted to go and he submitted a transfer request to this effect.

“I have already made my opinion clear on the nature of this transaction. I don’t regard it as a transfer deal – that is something which happens between two clubs when they both agree to trade – this is very much an enforced sale, for which we have agreed a sum of £19m as compensation plus a potential further £1.3m in additional compensation.”

Spurs have also said that Liverpool have apologised for the way they made their interest in the 28-year-old known. Therefore the official complaint made against Liverpool will now be dropped.

French defender Pascal Chimbonda has left Spurs and joined Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

Sunderland’s manager Roy Keane told his club’s official website: “Pascal is one of those rare players who can play anywhere across the back line and that will be invaluable to us, so naturally we’re very pleased to secure his services.

“He has a lot of Premier League experience which can only be a plus for us and he’ll give us more options at the back, creating more competition for places there, so all-in-all it’s a fantastic signing for us.”

Sir Les worried over striker departures

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on July 26th, 2008

Les Ferdinand has revealed his concern about Spurs’ possible lack of goalscoring this season.

The former Spurs striker said: “As a former player and a fan it worries me because all we hear about is the big players like the Berbatovs and the Keanes perhaps leaving and we are not hearing about replacements.

“I don’t think they can afford to sell both of them. If they both leave then Spurs are left with Darren Bent. I do think Darren is a good player but his career hasn’t started off well at Spurs.

“If you lose those two players you are losing 40-odd goals a season. How do you replace that? We don’t even know who Ramos is thinking about.

“I do like the new manager and I think he has some great ideas but it just worries me at this stage that there is not more positivity coming out of Spurs instead of negativity.

“He may have some strong ideas and may need the Keane and the Berbatov money to be able to go out and get who he wants but they won’t be proven in the Premier League when these two are.”

He added: “I have got to be honest, I would prefer to see the two front boys not go rather than bringing in anyone else because anyone that comes in will need that settling in period.

“We know how tough the Premier League is. There haven’t been that many strikers who have come in and hit the ground running. Fernando Torres did it, and Ruud van Nistelrooy did it but Roque Santa Cruz and Carlos Tevez needed time as did Dennis Bergkamp. There is no guarantee they will hit the ground running.”

Les, now 41, said of Spurs’ chances of success this coming season: “They could definitely do well in the Champions League straight away.

“Berbatov is a class act and hit the ground running when he first came here. And I have always said about Robbie Keane since he came to Tottenham that he is one of the players I would happily pay to watch.”

On Spurs new boy, Luka Modric, he said: “He looks a really good player but he is 5ft 6ins or 5ft 7ins and he is coming into the toughest league in the world so I would like to see how well he copes with that.

“That is always the question when you bring in foreign players.”

Liverpool striker keen on Keane arrival

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on July 24th, 2008

Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt says he would welcome Robbie Keane moving to Anfield.

The Dutchman said: “Keane has played for many years in the Premier League and he has done really well with Spurs – he’s a massive player for them.

“We all know how well he did for Spurs last season and if he could do the same for us he would be a great signing.

“When you are at a club like Liverpool you expect them to be linked with top players.

“Of course you want players like Keane because they can come in and do a good job.

“It would make competition for places even tougher but that’s the way it should be because it brings out the best in you.”

Tainio leaves Spurs for Sunderland

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on July 23rd, 2008

Teemu Tainio has left Spurs and joined Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

Sunderland manager Roy Keane said: “I’m delighted to sign a player of Teemu’s experience and quality, he’ll be a valuable addition to our squad.

“Teemu has showed versatility, playing in different midfield positions for both Tottenham and his previous club Auxerre.

“But his experience in particular and the fact he has played more than 40 international games shows he has a lot to offer Sunderland.”

Good luck to Tainio – pity he was injured a lot of his time at Spurs. Should be a good signing for Sunderland, provided he can keep fit of course.
