I have to take exception at the suggestion that Aston Villa are not a world class side with world class players and therefore Spurs should beat them. Whilst Villa may not be world class, this suggests that spurs are a world class side with world class players. On the evidence of the game last night..... CLEARLY NOT. It proves you cannot assemble expensive players and expect success. Spurs sold the only world class player they had to Manure in case you didn't notice. How any club can sell two players who scored 60 plus goals last season and then expect to do well this time around is beyond me. Bent looked average at best last night. There is no doubt that villa deserved to win. But for the performance of Gomez in the first half Villa could have been two or three up by half time. I very much doubt Ramos will still be there by the end of the season. Top four finish? Bottom four more like.

"The more things change, the more they stay the same". I never really understood what that meant or how it could apply to anything. It became all too clear this weekend just gone. A new look Tottenham, coaching staff included, but more of the same old - same old. A new forward partnership combining strength, agility and intelligence - no goals. A new potent midfield of experience, creativity and speed - can't send a ball into the box if they actually picked the ball up, took it to FedEX and paid premium for same day delivery into the penalty box. New look defence? defensive midfielder playing out of position? and as for numb skull shenanagans of Esso-Shell-Mobil-Ekotto, no comment. The same defeat on the road versus a team that could be best described as awful. If we have any aspirations of making the top 4, hold on, what have I been smoking? Top 6, it's the Boro's of the league that we should be beating, home, away and on the moon, it shouldn't matter where we play them, it should be an easy 3 pointer even under the sea. Now I know why WHL has the plushest, greenest, most beautiful lawn in the premier league, it's because every 2 weeks or so, $100M of manure is spread all over it! I am fuming at yet another poor start to the season. "It's only one game" I hear you say,"no need to get so riled up", but when you see the scum eking 3 points, Chelski trouncing Pompey, Liverpool beating the team that beat us in last season's opener (I am still upset at that), Villa making easy work of this year's relegation contender Man they're so $hitty; my prediction for this season's final spot is 11th. If we qualify for Europe through Inter-Toto, it would be a miracle. Here we go again, Glory Glory Tottenham Hotspurs, as the Spurs Go Marching ON ON Onto another season of mid table mediocrity. I am so despondent.

If Utd want him, we should take them to the cleaners. Berbatov is probably the best striker not playing in the Champions League (and is therefore not cup tied). They will have to do better than 2 squad players

I agree (with everything except the Yankees bit). Patience is needed but Jol needs to stick with a team. Granted the back line is the shambles right now, but it's already clear that with Lennon injured the midfield lacks width and class.

That being said when will Jol give Taarabt a run? With all the injuries I would rather see him in midfield than playing Robbie Keane as a winger. And when is Jenas going to fulfill his potential. Before this gets any more negative I'm going to cut myself off and try and find some patience.

Unbelievable start to the campaign.

Hear Bloody hear. Just registered on this site to say the same thing. Shut it Sherwood! Even if he was a Spurs supporter (which I very much doubt- didn't he fall out with Hoddle?) then all he's achieveing is to undermine the team and players. Have faith in Kaboul- he's a class player- and in Martin We Trust.

Re Brian Judson’s memories of Spurs matches of yesteryear I lived in Tottenham until 1965. Like Brian one of my other hobbies is local history and someone had sent me a copy of the photograph showing the crowds of supporters getting onto the trolley buses. outside Crest Motor Products and until now I wondered where this firm was situate
Brian also mentions that there were few cars around in those days but as a lad we ame and my friends made quite a bit of pocket=money on a Saturday by standing on the corner of Chalgrove Road and Park Lane ushering motorists to roadside parking spaces and we’d look after the cars until the match was over in the hope that we’d make a bob or two (5 to 10p). Other kids did the same in the other side roads around the ground. The local scout group and some of the house-owners nearby the ground would look after supporter’s bicycles for 6d (2.5 new p) and both the cars and bikes were nice little earners as they say. I went to infant and junior school in Park Lane and if there were a mid week afternoon match the gates would be opened half time just as we came out of school. That was very handy as we just nipped across the road and up the stairs into the ground to watch the rest of the match. Ted Ditchburn, yes he had a car would have had a job getting to the players entrance in the High Road what with all the crowds and he too could have easily have walked to the ground as he lived in nearby Commonwealth Road just around the corner from his grocery shop in Northumberland Park.
In the late 50s early 60s my friends and I would be found standing at the back of the Park Lane end or at the front on the centre line opposite the Directors box. We tear the names f the players, both teams, to make a “lucky dip” that cost about 10p a time and the person picking the player who scored the first goal would get the money
In view of the size of the crowds in those days, people very often fainted and many a time you’ed see a body being handed up over the heads of the spectators where it was man-handled down to a keen member of the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade who would waiting to administer smelling salts and glasses of water. Alas, the person that had fainted was not able to get back to his original place in the crowd so once he or she had been revived the poor soul had to sit in comfort on the side of the pitch along side the police and other officials where they had some of the best views of the game.
As Brian says, theoe were “Happy Days” and even with crowds in excess of 80,000 there was very little trouble or at least I saw none
