Sunday’s transfer rumours

Posted by Stevio in Rumours, Tottenham Hotspur on October 30th, 2006

David BeckhamAn increase in transfer speculation saw us interestingly linked with David Beckham.

Martin Jol said yesterday: “I’ll sit down and have a think about it tonight. We are well covered on the flanks already. It’s a difficult one. We’ve got Wayne Routledge, although he’s on loan, plus Hossam Ghaly and Aaron Lennon.”

I’m not sure what to think if we were interested in the Real Madrid midfielder. He’d cost a heck of a lot in terms of wages, and with that in mind, would he be able to justify such high wages?

I think if he joined he’d be very influential at the club with all his experience, something of a role that Edgar Davids has. Question is where would he play? I could possibly see him replacing Jermaine Jenas in a central miidfield role. But is he good enough there? On the right wing, I don’t think he contributes enough there, and with Aaron Lennon, there’s no role for him there. So it would be a curious move if it did in fact happen.

Other rumours are that Robbie Keane is being linked with a £5m move to Aston Villa and we’re supposedly considering making a move for ex-Arsenal defender Matthew Upson, who is with Birmingham City.

No gap in Watford draw

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 30th, 2006

Aaron LennonDespite drawing 0-0 at Watford, I think we deserved the draw. Aaron Lennon had many chances, but their ‘keeper Ben Foster was in fine form to keep the youngster at bay. They did have some very chances though: Tommy Smith’s glaring miss in front of goal and Ashley Young’s goal which was wrongly ruled off side.

Admittedly I was disappointed to see no Mido and Defoe starting, I know we have Club Brugge in the UEFA Cup on Thursday, but we need players who are scoring goals, sadly, they’re in short supply at the moment.

In other news, Calum Davenport is out for a few weeks with a groin injury.

Spurs manager Martin Jol told the club’s official site: “We had to rest Calum this weekend and he will probably be out for the next two weeks.”

I hope he makes a speedy recovery, especially with Ledley King playing so many matches after recovery from his knee problem.

How big is the Watford gap?

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 28th, 2006

Following our fantastic 5-0 League Cup win over Milton Keynes Dons midweek, we now take the short trip to Watford. There’s only a six point gap between us and them, but in terms of quality, there’s a huge gap. They have some capable players though, Ashley Young being the main one catching the eye of late with his goals. Still though, we should be capable of getting a win at Vicarage Road.

Sadly Didier Zokora is still missing due to illness, however, as I’ve mentioned before, Tom Huddlestone is doing a fine job standing in. Lee Young-Pyo is also out with an ankle injury, although I can’t see him forcing Benoit Assou-Ekotto or Pascal Chimbonda out of the team at the moment anyway. Paul Stalteri is doubtful too, but it doesn’t appear that he’s a first-team regular anymore.

The interesting but good headache Martin Jol will have is who to play upfront. The fact is Jermain Defoe and Mido have scored five in their last two games together, therefore I’d be tempted to stick with them against Watford. Of course, Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane won’t be happy, but if you’re in form you play!

So come on Spurs, let’s get another win tomorrow!

Defoe: It definitely won’t happen again

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 27th, 2006

Jermain DefoeAfter the drama last weekend, Spurs striker Jermain Defoe says he’s learnt from the incident with West Ham midfielder Javier Mascherano.

Defoe said: “It was in the heat of the moment. I need to move forward, it definitely won’t happen again.

“I didn’t do much, but it was out of character. I don’t usually get involved like that.”

He added: “I just want to play football and score goals, everybody knows that.

“I am a professional person and a passionate player. When I get on the pitch I just want to win every game.”

Perhaps as an apology, Jermain should take the Argentinian out for a ‘bite’ to eat! :)

Defoe: This has been blown out of all proportion

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 24th, 2006

I’m amazed how the media try and make something massive out of something very small. It happens with many non-football things, like the McCartney divorce, but for Jermain Defoe’s ‘bite’ on Javier Mascherano to make the front pages of newspapers is ridiculous.

Thankfully the incident isn’t going to be taken further, and rightly so.

A spokesman for the FA said: “We are unable to take any action because the referee has already dealt with the incident.

“Fifa regulations prevent us from taking retrospective action.”

Defoe had earlier said: “This has been blown out of all proportion. The referee was standing right over me and if he felt I had done anything bad he would have sent me off.

“When the West Ham player fouled me, I reacted in a bit of a mischievous way; my character is a little like that at times. The referee was standing right over me and, if he felt I had done anything bad, he would have sent me off.

“The incident doesn’t look great on TV and I accept that as a role model to kids I have a responsibility to conduct myself in the right way which I always try to do on and off the pitch.”

The story of course doesn’t end there as flop Mascherano now claims: “To receive a bite was the worst thing that has happened to me,” if that’s the worst thing he’s ever had to suffer, then he’s had a very blessed life!

Defoe nibbles while Mido nobbles West Ham

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 23rd, 2006

We’ve needed some extra bite upfront, but Jermain Defoe’s pounce on West Ham’s Javier Mascherano was going a ‘bit’ too far! Spurs manager Martin Jol has played it down though.

The Dutchman said: “He was nibbling his arm – there will be no mark. Ask Mascherano if he has got a mark.

“It is part of the game. They kicked him three times from behind in 10 minutes and he wanted to show his frustration in a nice, comical way.”

Regardless of that incident, it was such an crucial win. Mido’s winner just before half-time was an impressive strike – the way he flicked the ball up and hit home off the post was fantastic stuff!

We had many more chances to get the second but again we failed to kill off the opposition.

Martin said: “We should have scored a second goal and finished the game. We didn’t and that made it difficult.

“In the first half we didn’t play well but we were professional. And I didn’t think we gave away a lot and we deserved to win.

“It was our third game in a week and not easy. But it was a great performace and the team showed great character.”

Besiktas win to spur us on?

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 22nd, 2006

Tom HuddlestoneGreat news is that Mido is back for the West Ham game after recovering from a thigh injury. Didier Zokora unfortunately will be missing, but we have a very able deputy in Tom Huddlestone.

The Hammers have lost their last six competitive games, even so, we should still be wary of them. They’re certainly not the team of last season, but whether they’ll up their game tomorrow is unknown.

Some have blamed their ‘demise’ down to the two Argentines, Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez, whether this is true, who knows. I’m just hoping that we carry our form from Thursday’s win into this game and give them a thrashing!

Besiktas 0-2 Spurs

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 20th, 2006

Dimitar BerbatovWhat appeared to be a very tough game turned out be to something of a stroll. Even without an ill Didier Zokora, Spurs’ midfield looks strong and fluid with Tom Huddlestone looking very much at home in the defensive role. Even Jenas, Murphy and Ghaly performed their tasks well.

The highlight of course was Dimitar Berbatov’s goal. The Bulgarian showed what a classy striker he is when he went passed the ‘keeper to slot home.

We had fortune on the first goal, with Hossam Ghaly’s shot rebounding in, but the Turks were outclassed. Even when they were given the chance put the pressure on they couldn’t make it count and instead gave us multiple opportunities to extend our lead – Robbie Keane’s shot off the bar being one.

But overall it was a fine win and a fine performance. Lets have some of the same on Sunday against West Ham!!!

Davenport’s red rescinded

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 18th, 2006

Calum DavenportGood news is that Calum Davenport will be available this weekend for the Premiership match against West Ham United.

Referee Martin Atkinson gave the defender a red card in the 1-1 draw at Villa for a professional foul on Gabriel Agbonlahor, however, the FA have now rescinded the card.

Other news, reserve striker Andy Barcham has extended his contract at White Hart Lane.

Spurs manager Martin Jol said: “Andy is one of a group of lads who are coming through together and developing into very good players already. We are very happy with him and he demonstrated his ability with a fine goal on Monday [in the draw against Watford] after coming back from injury.”

No Olympic sized mistakes, please

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 17th, 2006

White Hart LaneSpurs’ sporting director Damien Comolli says we won’t be moving to the 2012 Olympic Stadium.

He said: “There is no way we are looking to move there.

“All grounds with a track have a poor atmosphere, attendances are down and clubs say moving there was a mistake.”

He added: “We are looking at all possible options, including extending White Hart Lane, but we may go somewhere else.

“Whatever happens, it won’t affect the financial stability of the club or the ability to invest in players.

“The board are determined that doesn’t happen and we will be very careful about it.”

All I can say is that we don’t want to move to one of those stadiums that resemble many many others. They may have all the latest facilities, but we want an original state of the art stadium!
