Manchester United to make silly Berbatov bid?

Posted by Stevio in Rumours, Tottenham Hotspur on May 25th, 2007

The Sun newspaper are reporting that Manchester United are preparing a bid of £27.5m in cash and striker Louis Saha for Dimitar Berbatov.

If there is any truth to it, only time will tell. But it looks like we’re set for a summer of speculation surrounding the Bulgarian.

If they do make that offer, then I hope it is rejected. First of all, Saha has been injured quite a lot recently, and added to that, if a world class player leaves we want a world class player in return, not some injury prone reserve player.

Secondly, the Chairman Daniel Levy said we aren’t a selling club, so what’s the point of selling? There isn’t unless it is an absolutely stupid bid that only fools would make.

The only other reason I can think of is if Berbatov is brainwashed by United and all the gossip. Let’s face it, it could happen, after all they have Champions League football.

I don’t believe any player is bigger than the club, but I do believe if he does leave it would hamper our progress – much like Michael Carrick’s departure did last summer.

The newspaper writes that United could offer an ‘incredible’ £39m and say Saha is worth £11.5m. He’s 28 and suffering injuries, so that’s an inaccurate valuation. I’d say he’s worth around £5m, meaning a deal would be worth £32.5m. If United are serious, they should talk cash only from £40m upwards. As if they want him, they will have to pay ridiculous money, it’s as simple as that!

Spurs agree fee for Southampton star?

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on May 23rd, 2007

Breaking news earlier today was that Spurs had agreed to sign Southampton left-back Gareth Bale. Unfortunately later Southampton reportedly denied any agreement.

I’m not exactly sure where the reports originated from, but it looks like Sky Sports. In the past they’ve been privy to inside knowledge, so it will be interesting to see if there’s any truth to it. In the meantime, check out the video of the Welsh kid in action, he shows some great skills.

Mido unhappy at Spurs

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on May 22nd, 2007

MidoMido has publicly revealed that he’s not happy at Spurs.

Mido told Al-Mehwar: “I would be lying if I said that I am happy at Spurs. Any player who doesn’t play will not feel happy.

“The hard times started with me making the wrong decision.

“I made a big mistake when I signed permanently for Spurs. I know that this could result in problems but it is the truth.”

I can’t say I’m surprised by this news really, as he was never going to get a look in with Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov in such great form.

I think the fact that Mido this season has looked slow and overweight, therefore hasn’t been much use to us. I think he’s got the potential to be a world class player, sadly I think his mentality just isn’t ever going to be ‘world class’. So him leaving isn’t a big deal to us.

Ghaly apologises

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on May 12th, 2007

Hossam GhalyFollowing Hossam Ghaly’s tantrum after being substituted on Thursday, he has now apologised for his childish actions.

Ghaly told the club’s official website: “I am just so angry with myself. I have always considered it an honour to wear the Tottenham shirt and I never intended to show any disrespect.

“I knew things weren’t happening for me out there, my play was terrible and I could hear the crowd jeering me. I was so upset at the fans’ reaction. I have enjoyed playing in front of the Club’s supporters all season and I felt I had given of my best all the time and played some decent football. It is always hard to accept being substituted after such a short period of time and I was upset and taken aback by the cheering. I am a player who plays with my heart.

“I know my reaction was totally wrong. I have apologised to the manager and I also want to apologise to the fans. I hope they don’t judge me on this incident alone. I have tried hard for the Club this season.”

King slams retirement rumours

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on May 12th, 2007

Ledley KingSpurs defender Ledley King has slammed the speculation that claimed his career was over.

Ledley told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “When I first heard the rumours, it wasn’t funny in the least.

“I wouldn’t say it made me hurt, but it made me think about what was happening.

“I was never worried about my career and never felt my career was going to be threatened in any way.

“But I was aware that these stories were going around. I heard it from people in the streets, friends even asked me and I heard from everywhere.

“People were stopping me in the street and asking me whether my career was over. People were beginning to believe it.

“I’ve had my fair share of injuries but I don’t think they’ve ever been bad enough for people to believe it was all over.

“It was another ridiculous story circulating that gets out of control.”

Berbatov to sign new Spurs deal?

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on May 12th, 2007

Dimitar BerbatovI must say I was very concerned with all the recent speculation linking Dimitar Berbatov with moves to other clubs. Thankfully it seems he’s going to sign a new deal at White Hart Lane.

Berbatov told The Sun: “I am really happy that I made the choice to come here to Tottenham to work with the manager Martin Jol – he is a great man.

“I have said it many times, when you play good, when you score goals, especially here in England, everyone is watching you.

“Manchester, Chelsea they take an interest but I’m settled at Tottenham.”

Dawson gets new contract

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on May 11th, 2007

Michael DawsonIt’s great news to see Michael Dawson sign a new deal until 2012. He absolutely deserves it – he’s been so consistent and such a man mountain in defence.

He told the club’s website: “It’s really great that the Club has looked to reward me with a new contract. I still had four years left on my contract so this represents a further commitment on both my and the Club’s behalf.

“We have got everything to play for as we head into our final game of the season. Our squad has settled so well. We’ve got a lot of different nationalities and our fair share of jokers, the team spirit is fantastic. You might think we are looking for a rest but actually we’ve all enjoyed the season so much that, in some ways, we are sad it is coming to an end.”

Spurs draw with Blackburn

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on May 11th, 2007

After seeing Blackburn Rovers’ line-up prior to last night’s game, admittedly I was concerned. They have some fine players in their team – like Brett Emerton, David Bentley, Morten Gamst Pedersen, and of course, Benni McCarthy. Sure they have to ‘spoilers’ in there too, but they’re a very tough team with a good amount of skill.

I was disappointed to see Malbranque going off injured – he’s such a creative player and is always buzzing around – pity that – in my opinion – Mokoena ‘did him’ on purpose.

They took their goal well to go into the lead. It was a great cross from Gamst Pedersen, finished superbly by McCarthy. It was really annoying to see them score considering that was their first shot on target though.

Blackburn could have gone 2-0 up when they hit the crossbar from a Samba header.

Luckily Berbatov helped us get level when his shot was parried and Defoe tucked home. We definitely deserved the equaliser.

It was a shame we couldn’t get the winner. Keane was close when he hit the post. But in the end I think it was a fair result. Least now we only need one more point to secure UEFA Cup football next season.

I wasn’t pleased with Hossam Ghaly throwing his shirt to the ground – he was having a shocking game and was deservedly substituted. He should apologise publicly for his actions, otherwise I’m sure Spurs fans will agree, that we don’t want to see him wear a Spurs shirt ever again.

Vital three points for Spurs

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on May 7th, 2007

Most of the talk may be of Charlton Athletic being relegated, but, more importantly to us Spurs fans, getting the three points at The Valley was far more important. It is sad to see them go down as they used to play some good football, but they’re far from the side Alan Curbishley built a few years ago.

I thought all the players played well. Of course, Dimitar Berbatov’s performance stood out – as always. His goal to put us in the lead was fantastic, the skill to get by El Karkouri was sublime and his finished was so clinical.

Admittedly there were times that Charlton put on the pressure, but they lacked the skill and creativity to open us up.

Defoe’s deflected effort scored the second to send Charlton down, but we’re now sixth in the Premiership and just need two points to secure UEFA Cup football next season.

Our last two games are at home – on Thursday we entertain Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City visit on Sunday.

Best of luck next season to Charlton, as long as they invest wisely in new signings, I’ll think they’ll win promotion back to the Premiership straight away.
