Spurs and Manchester United deny Berbatov bid

Posted by Stevio in Rumours, Tottenham Hotspur on August 25th, 2007

Dimitar BerbatovBoth Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have denied that the Old Trafford club have bid for striker Dimitar Berbatov.

United executive David Gill said: “We have categorically not made a bid for Dimitar Berbatov.”

Spurs reportedly added: “We have not received an offer and would not accept one if we did – it is as simple as that.”

The Bulgarian’s agent said United had ‘enquired’ while the quotes said ‘bid’. Regardless, Spurs manager Martin Jol is intent on keeping the 26-year-old.

He said: “Berbatov loves me. If he is playing well he gets all the praise and if he is not doing well I have to tell him.

“I had one approach and I said ‘I’d rather die than sell him’.”

Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on August 25th, 2007

On Sunday we take on Manchester United at Old Trafford. Of course, we never win there, so we have no chance, right? Well, until that final whistle goes, I always think we’re in with a chance!

Team news is that Gareth Bale and Teemu Tainio are back, however, Darren Bent looks likely to miss out. Dimitar Berbatov might play at United too – in a Spurs shirt!

For United, they’re missing key duo Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Spurs strike to leave?

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on August 25th, 2007

Spurs manager Martin Jol has revealed that Jermain Defoe could be sold. The England striker has just under two years remaining on his contract at White Hart Lane.

Jol told The Sun: “I had an argument with him because everyone else is committed and he does not want to extend his contract.

“I want to keep him but the chairman does not want another Sol Campbell on his hands.

“Jermain tells everybody he loves the club and we love him.

“We’ve made him a good offer but he won’t even discuss it.”

Jol stays for now?

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on August 23rd, 2007

Juande RamosSo after all the media hype surrounding Martin Jol’s position as manager at Spurs, the club release a statement saying he’s safe for now, but has to deliver success, or else.

All that is fair enough, however, with Sevilla manager Juande Ramos revealing that he’s been made an “excellent, dizzying offer,” it makes you wonder if the club are already making plans to replace Jol.

They have said in a statement on their official website: “The Club wishes to make it clear and unequivocal that no individual was or has been offered the position of manager/coach at this Club whilst that position has been held by Martin Jol. It is wholly inaccurate and inappropriate to suggest otherwise.”

Who do you believe? A 52-year-old Spaniard or the club you have been a fan of for many years?

Now I would like the managerial team and players to concentrate on the games ahead. Somehow I don’t that’s going to happen, especially with Paul Robinson being outspoken in the press today.

He said: “When you see how far Martin Jol has taken the club, to then go behind his back to obviously seek other options is very disappointing.”

There’s enough negative talk in the media and it certainly doesn’t help when your own players add fuel to the fire. Therefore I hope Mr. Robinson is given a talking to on club etiquette.

I think the way things stand Martin won’t be at the club beyond next summer. He has already been linked with the Dutch national job after Euro 2008.

It’s a shame how things have worked out, as he has probably been our best manager for many many years.

Jol wanted to sell Berbatov?

Posted by Stevio in Rumours, Tottenham Hotspur on August 21st, 2007

Dimitar BerbatovThe newspaper talk surrounding the future of Spurs manager Martin Jol continues today.

The Sun are reporting that Jol and chairman Daniel Levy had ‘an amazing row’ as the Dutchman wanted to sell Dimitar Berbatov.

Whether this is true or not, the idea of selling Berbatov is crazy. Sure we have Darren Bent now, but our squad would be seriously weakened if the Bulgarian was sold.

Coincidentally, it wouldn’t surprise me if Manchester United make a move for Berbatov. They’ve had a poor start to the season, and with Rooney and Ronaldo out, they’re lacking a goalscoring striker. Of course, let’s hope this doesn’t happen!

Back to Jol – if he is to go, then it would be appreciated if the club would make an official statement, as all this paper talk and no word from the club is very annoying!

Dinghy to be sunk?

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on August 20th, 2007

Martin JolAfter a good 4-0 win over Derby County, all the talk should be about the game, instead, we’ve got rumours and reports surrounding the future of manager Martin Jol.

At the moment there’s nothing official, therefore the Dutchman hasn’t been sacked and is still manager at Spurs, however, for how much longer?

Jol himself has already said: “I thought there were whispers last year – and there are whispers at any club all the time.

“I don’t know if I’m being undermined. I don’t think so but you never know.”

I would be very disappointed if he was to be sacked after just three games. However, if the club have good reason, then obviously I’d more than likely understand.

Who would replace Jol? Seems Seville manager Juande Ramos is favourite, although he has denied that he’s already held talks with a Spurs ‘representative’.

Ramos said: “I totally deny that I met with any Tottenham representative. Is there any evidence that demonstrates the contrary?

“It’s totally false. I was with one friend in two hotels and I’m only shown leaving and in my car.

“I didn’t speak to anyone about Tottenham or any other team.

“It’s true I was in the hotel as I went to see a friend who has nothing to do with football and who was in Seville on a visit. But there was no meeting about Tottenham.”

Jurgen Klinsmann, who impressed whilst German national coach, has been linked to a return to White Hart Lane too.

Only time will tell if Martin Jol will be leaving, but after seeing him after Saturday’s win in post match interviews, he certainly didn’t seem his old self.

Next up: Derby County

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on August 18th, 2007

Tomorrow at 3pm, we take on Derby County at White Hart Lane. As mentioned previously, Dimitar Berbatov will be missing due to his groin problem, and Younes Kaboul will be out with his hamstring injury.

Michael Dawson looks likely to be out, so I’m expecting Rocha and Gardner to start in the centre of defence, with Chimbonda at right-back and Stalteri at left-back.

I’m guessing that three out of four positions in midfield will remain the same, with Malbranque, Zokora and Jenas retaining their places. Robbie Keane should vacate the right-wing position and either move upfront or become a substitute, leaving Wayne Routledge to replace him. An alternative would be for Jenas to move to the right-wing and Huddlestone come into the centre of midfield.

Darren Bent should continue in his striking role with either Keane or Jermain Defoe.

Derby have drawn 2-2 at home against Portsmouth and lost 1-0 at Manchester City so far this season.

Their line-up consists mainly of Championship experienced players, however, they have some decent players like Welsh striker Robert Earnshaw and ex-Luton striker Steve Howard.

I’m expecting they’ll come and defend, with the aging Darren Moore leading from the heart of their defence.

I don’t expect them to roll over easily, but we must be creative, get crosses into the box and work at them until they break down.

We should get a win, but on the performances of the last few games it’s vital that we play as a team and defend as a team, as with that as a solid base we should finally gain our first points of the season.

Van der Vaart and Davies linked with Spurs

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on August 16th, 2007

Rafael van der VaartToday, The Sun newspaper are reporting our interest in Hamburg midfielder Rafael van der Vaart. It’s reported that the German club are not too keen on selling and would want more than £10m for the Dutchman!

We’re also said to have had an £8m bid for Curtis Davies rejected by West Bromwich Albion, who reportedly want a staggering £10m!

I think van vaart would be a great signing, however, I’d rather see a left-sided midfielder, and perhaps even a defensive central midfielder signed.

Davies would be a good signing too, but the price is ridiculous. We already have six central defenders at the club, and unless we offload one, I don’t see the point in spending money when we need to improve midfield.

Anyways, here’s a video to drool over the skills over van der Vaart.

Berbatov and Kaboul injured

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on August 16th, 2007

Darren BentThere’s been some really bad news with both Dimitar Berbatov and Younes Kaboul now out injured. There is some good news however, with Gareth Bale and Lee Young-Pyo close to returning.

Manager Martin Jol told our club’s official website: “We’ve had a couple more blows. Younes Kaboul will be out for the next three or four weeks with the hamstring injury he suffered against Everton, that’s a real kick in the teeth and Dimitar Berbatov has a groin problem. It’s an old problem and he will now visit a specialist in Germany. He will be out for a couple of weeks.”

He added: “Gareth Bale is looking better. Our medical team have also told me that Young-Pyo Lee is up to 85 per cent fitness and that will soon be 100 per cent.”

I can’t wait to see Gareth Bale in a Spurs shirt. He was so influential at Southampton, and I’m hoping he’ll make the same impact at Spurs.

With Berbatov out, this is the opportunity for Bent to shine. He’s the man we’re looking for goals from and we seriously need him to deliver. Who will be his partner? I’m not sure. Keane doesn’t seem on form, so that leaves Jermain Defoe. On paper, Bent and Defoe could be an explosive strike partnership.

Don’t Panic!

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on August 15th, 2007

Well I’m not quite panicking just yet, but certainly this isn’t the start of the season I envisaged. Two defeats in the space of a few days isn’t great either.

I always felt the Sunderland away was a potential banana skin, and a winning goal by Chopra in the fourth minute of injury time proved that.

Then Everton at home was always going to be tricky, as shown when they stole a win last season at White Hart Lane.

I know we have a have lot of injuries, which is ridiculous at this stage of the season, but Martin Jol needs to choose his best team and stick with it, meaning sticking with his best two strikers and playing players in their best positions – not playing Robbie Keane as a winger!

I’ve noticed fans already calling for his head, but patience is needed. I learned from following the Yankees that you can have a very bad string of results but still turn things around, so it’s best to calm down and get behind the team.

We have Derby County at home at the weekend. Here’s hoping for a better result!
