Sevilla president slams Spurs

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on October 30th, 2007

Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido appears to be unhappy following Juande Ramos’ move to Spurs.

Del Nido said: “I can assure you that we at Sevilla will pour all of our energy and all of our force into making sure that Tottenham pay the consequences of this situation, a situation that they have illegitimately provoked.

“We will do everything in our power and use all the means at our disposal to make sure of that.

“Here in Spain, we’re not used to treachery existing between clubs. Nowhere in European football has something like this happened before with the season under way.

“I will leave it for Spurs and their fans to take a look at themselves and define their behaviour.”

I can’t say I have knowledge of how Ramos’ move came about, therefore cannot comment on any alleged tapping up, however, I do wonder whether del Nido is blinkered, as it’s common knowledge that players are tapped up. For example, how many times do we hear the managers of Barcelona and Real Madrid commenting on players that they’re keen to sign? Very often.

I also find it bizarre that del Nido mentions Spurs fans, are we responsible for making an alleged illegal approach too?

In response to reports that Spurs could make moves to sign Sevilla pair Daniel Alves and Freddie Kanoute, del Nido says Spurs will have to pay their buy-out clauses, which reportedly totals £60m.

He said: “I doubt very much that Tottenham have the money to buy them. If they want to buy them in the winter transfer market they will have to pay their buy-out clauses. But Sevilla does not want to sell any of its star players.”

He added: “Tottenham will get the response from Sevilla that they deserve. And that response will be to channel all our energy into getting what we deserve after they have behaved the way they have behaved. The English clubs, who always seem to be looking at our players, should know by now that when we want to keep our players we keep them.”

Robbie Keane’s penalty against Blackburn

Below you can see a video of Robbie Keane scoring the penalty against Blackburn Rovers. Unfortunately the goal wasn’t enough, but it’s a cool video as it was taken by a fan in the crowd.

Spurs lose, Ramos appointed

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 29th, 2007

The pundits say, “Spurs can’t go down,” and “Spurs won’t go down,” thing is we’re in the relegation zone, so until we’re out of there, it’s more than possible.

Today losing 2-1 to Blackburn Rovers was unfortunate. We should have won comfortably. Unfortunately their ‘keeper Brad Friedel was in inspired form and kept out our efforts on goal. They snatched all the points in the 90th minute. How typical of how things are going of late.

Juande Ramos is now in charge after Clive Allen’s one game stint. The Spaniard signed a four-year contract yesterday and has brought with him coach Marcos Alvarez from Sevilla.

Gus Poyet looks to be on his way after Leeds United gave Spurs permission to hold talks with the Uruguayan. This comes after the clubs agreed a ‘confidential’ compensation deal.

Still the media slam the board for searching for a new manager so early on in the season. In my opinion something triggered that search, whether it was something Jol did or whatever, they wanted a replacement and now finally have a replacement.

So Jol has gone and it’s time to move on and hope that the new management team can build on the mess that Jol left. I think we’ve got some great players and if Ramos can bring them together and make them play and defend as a team, he should bring success to White Hart Lane.

Ramos set for Spurs?

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on October 26th, 2007

Juande RamosLast night was quite an odd one with how Jol’s sacking unfolded during the 2-1 defeat by Getafe. It’s typical of Tottenham Hotspur that things are always done in a dramatic fashion.

I’m glad but sad that Martin Jol has gone. He did a great job in the first two seasons finishing in fifth position twice, but this season the wheels came off and we’re now third from bottom in the Premiership, so the change had to be made.

Jol’s assistant Chris Hughton has been sacked too, which is disappointing considering the length of time he’d been with the club as a player and coach. But I wish him, and Martin too, well for the future.

Now, all the talk is that Sevilla manager Juande Ramos will be Jol’s successor. If reports and rumours are to be believed, his appointment is imminent.

Ramos is 53-years-old and has managed Alcoyano, Levante, Barcelona B, Lleida, Rayo Vallecano, Real Betis, Espanyol and Malaga.

The Pedro Muñoz-born manager has won the UEFA Cup twice, he’s also won the UEFA Super Cup, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.

Apparently the Spaniard has been learning English but isn’t fluent just yet, hence where the appointment of Gustavo Poyet as assistant comes in.

You can learn more about Ramos via his website at juanderamos.com.

Whether Ramos is the right man to become Spurs manager, only time will tell, but whoever is appointed, I will give my full support to.

Jol agrees to leave? Ramos agrees to join?

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 25th, 2007

Martin JolAt the time of writing it’s half-time with Spurs and Getafe drawing one all. Bizarrely, The Time are reporting that manager Martin Jol agreed severance pay to leave.

They also report that Sevilla manager Juande Ramos has agreed to be Jol’s successor. They also say that former Spurs midfielder Gus Poyet has been approached to join as assistant manager.

I guess we’ll find out soon if there’s any truth to it.

Tottenham Hotspur v Getafe

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 25th, 2007

Tonight, Getafe come to White Hart Lane in the UEFA Cup. I can’t say I know much about them except they’re managed by former Denmark and Real Madrid midfielder Michael Laudrup.

Of course, Martin Jol is still manager, and even though I would prefer him to have been axed already, I hope everyone focuses on the team rather than Jol, as regardless of who is manager, a win is the most important thing.

Unfortunately Gareth Bale is out injured with a bruised foot and will be missing for the next week or so. Young-Pyo Lee is reportedly doubtful, which would mean mayhem at left-back. Radek Cerny is likely to continue in goal for the injured Paul Robinson. Ledley King, Ricardo Rocha and Benoit Assou-Ekotto continue to be out.

The match is live on ITV4 (in the UK) and kicks off at 7:45pm. The show starts at 7pm.

Jol out, Klinsmann in?

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 23rd, 2007

Jurgen KlinsmannI thought this morning I’d wake up with the news that Martin Jol has been sacked as Spurs manager – but no. I’m still hopeful that the axe will fall and have Sky Sports News on with the hope of seeing breaking news announcing Jol’s departure.

He really has to go now, there’s no way back, so if the board aren’t going to do the right thing, then maybe Jol should resign and save us some money at the same time.

I don’t hate Jol, and don’t have any ill feeling towards him, however, I’m sure a lot of fans will agree that if he doesn’t go promptly, things could start to get ugly.

On his replacement I would like Jurgen Klinsmann. I was a massive fan on his whilst he had that initial year at Spurs and even though he soon left, I still rate him highly, as he always conducted himself in such a professional manner. He did come back to us for six months a few years later and even though he wasn’t the same player, in the end he scored some crucial goals to keep us up, remember the four he scored at Wimbledon?

I think the only downside to Jurgen taking over is that he has no domestic managerial experience, he does though have international experience though with the German national side, with whom he lead to the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup.

Crucially, I think Klinsmann would have such an inspirational effect on the players, that his lack of experience wouldn’t matter. Therefore I really do hope the club make a big effort in trying to get him!

Spurs must sack Martin Jol now!

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on October 22nd, 2007

What does it take for the board to take action? Do we have to actually get relegated for them to sack Martin Jol?

We’ve lost to Newcastle United 3-1 and the performance was terrible.

We’re third from bottom with only one win in ten. The time is now for Jol to go!

I guess we’ll have to wait and see if there’s any truth to it. In the meantime, check out the 26-year-old in action in the video below.

Support Paul Robinson!

Posted by Stevio in England, Tottenham Hotspur on October 8th, 2007

Paul RobinsonThere’s a lot of talk regarding Paul Robinson’s peformances asking whether he should be dropped by Martin Jol. My take on it is that he’s been unlucky.

Admittedly, he did make a blunder against Aston Villa when he dropped the ball from a cross, but I think otherwise people are being harsh on him.

Even yesterday people are blaming him for the first goal conceded at Liverpool. First of all the free-kick came through the wall, which it shouldn’t do. Secondly, the shot was deflected off Jermaine Jenas. I think usually a ‘keeper will do their best to block the shot, which he did, it was just unfortunate that Liverpool striker Andriy Voronin got to the ball before our defenders did and scored.

I think Spurs manager Martin Jol has two options, he can either keep Robsinon in the team or drop him. I don’t think it’ll do the ‘keeper any good dropping him, I think Robinson just needs to see this spell out and get through it. He’s a not bad ‘keeper, and it’s just a matter of time before all this negativity goes away.

There’s even talk that Robinson will be dropped by England and replaced by David James. This is a ‘keeper who already has a nickname of ‘Calamity James’!

I hope people keep faith with Robbo and support him, as all ‘keepers make mistakes at times in there career.
