Gunter agrees to Spurs move

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on December 25th, 2007

Tottenham Hotspur have sealed the signing of Cardiff City full-back Chris Gunter. The 18-year-old will officially become a Spurs player when the transfer window opens on January 1st.

There’s been nothing official on the fee or contract length, however reports claim the deal could reach up to £3million.

On the move, Chris’ father Gerald said: “Christopher spoke with Gareth Bale, who is very happy at Spurs, and that helped Chris to make up his mind.

“Gareth told Christopher Spurs was a great club.

“Christopher is really determined to make the step up, he has said before that you’re not a real professional footballer until you move away from home.

“It’s a short career and these kind of chances only come around once or twice, he feels it is right to move.”

He added: “As a parent it is really reassuring to see him go to a club who have invested a lot of money and time into young British talent.

“We can look and see that Gareth [Bale] is already there and lots of others too.

“Aaron Lennon, Jermaine Jenas, Danny Rose, Tom Huddlestone, Jamie O’Hara, all these players were signed as teenagers and they’ve been given their chance.

“It makes a big difference, he will be surrounded by good young British players, that doesn’t happen if you sign for someone like, say, Arsenal.

“He should be able to fit in quickly, I believe he’s training for the first time on Christmas Day.

“Obviously his mum is a bit upset he’s moving out and away from home – he’s been with Cardiff since he was eight years old – but we’ll go and watch him every chance we get.”

Arsenal 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on December 24th, 2007

So, we lost yet again to Arsenal. At least we put in a good performance and deserved something from the game. If only Robbie Keane had hit the back of the net instead of the crossbar or having his penalty saved.

I thought Jamie O’Hara had a brilliant first start in a Spurs shirt. Of course he was playing his former club. He looked very much at home in the centre of midfield. Also Paul Robinson put in yet another solid display in goal.

Dimitar Berbatov scored a cracker of a goal. Keane had backheeled the ball into the Bulgarian’s path, who blasted it home near post.

It’s just a shame we conceeded two weak goals. The first goal by Arsenal could have been avoided if players had tracked back, and the second, well, Tom Huddlestone, where were you? Also if you look at the photo, isn’t it strange how high Nicklas Bendtner is up in the air? What’s he on!? I demand a drugs test! :)

Spurs set to sign Cardiff City youngster?

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on December 23rd, 2007

Spurs’ first signing of the transfer window could be Cardiff City full-back Chris Gunter. If the move goes through the Welsh international will reportedly join in a £3million deal.

Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale said: “In our situation as a Championship football club, we have to consider anything of this magnitude.

“Chris has indicated he wants to talk to them and we have given permission.”

He continued: “I think with the price itself we would have had to consider it no matter what the situation was financially.

“Clearly given the challenge we’ve had with [creditors] Langston, it’s made the financial security of the club more acute that we do look at this sort of transfer.

“But if Chris had said he wasn’t interested in going, we wouldn’t have sold him.”

Yesterday the Welsh club had said in a statement on their official website the following.

“We can officially confirm that Chris Gunter is in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential move in January.

“We had received a number of offers from Tottenham concerning Chris. When the figure reached our valuation of the player on Thursday night we then spoke to Chris to inform him of their interest. Chris then agreed to meet with Tottenham with a view to a permanent move to the London Club.”

Spurs for life

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on December 21st, 2007

“Being a Spurs fan as a boy and a player for so many years, it would be hard to sign for Arsenal. I don’t think the fans here would ever forgive me.”

Words from non-other than Sol Campbell. Perhaps someone should have reminded him of saying that before complaining of ‘verbal abuse’ from “some people may be a little bit disgruntled at how I left certain clubs.”

I do agree that ‘verbal abuse’ towards Campbell at matches should only go so far, however, if he expects Spurs fans to be silenced, then I totally disagree. After all, this is the man that once said that his ‘heart and soul’ was at Spurs.

I doubt Sol Campbell will ever realise the magnitude of his deception in the months leading up to his transfer to Arsenal, but for Spurs fans, we will always remember our former club captain as ‘Judas’.

Spurs keen on Emanuelson?

Posted by Stevio in Rumours, Tottenham Hotspur on December 21st, 2007

We’ve been linked with a move for Ajax Amsterdam left-back Urby Emanuelson. Spurs are reported to have told the Dutch club to ‘name their price’.

We certainly need to improve at left-back with Gareth Bale and Benoit Assou-Ekoto out injured, we’re left with just Lee Young-Pyo.

Emanuelson is 21 and has played at least 30 games per season over the last two years for Ajax.

Born in Amsterdam, he’s played at both under-21 and full international level.

He’s score four times in his career, and as you can see below, he’s got quite a shot on him.

FA reject Zokora appeal

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on December 21st, 2007

Didier ZokoraI can’t believe the FA have once again turned down an appeal, this time over Didier Zokora’s sending off at Manchester City. It was very clear that is was in no way shape or form a red card, therefore how can the FA back the decision as ‘serious foul play’?

This is twice that the FA have let us down – the previous time was when Robbie Keane was sent off in the Birmingham City defeat. That time is was a yellow card at most.

Like Robbie, Zokora will be miss three matches. The ban starts this Saturday against Arsenal.

Talking of Arsenal, they will be our opponents in the semi-finals of the League Cup. The first leg is away on the 9th of January. Hopefully this year we can get a good result away and then finish them off at White Hart Lane.

Manchester United offer Saha and Brown for Berbatov?

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on December 19th, 2007

Following Spurs’ fantastic quarter-final cup win at Manchester City yesterday, the Daily Express are today reporting that Manchester United want Dimitar Berbatov.

According to the newspaper, United have offered Spurs Louis Saha and Wes Brown and £6million in cash.

If this is true, well it’s laughable, as Louis Saha and Wes Brown are both injury prone, plus the cash on offer is rather insulting.

It’s quite clear Berbatov is a world class player, therefore if they’re serious, they should start talking world class money.

It’s unclear whether the Bulgarian’s heart is still at White Hart Lane, however, his recent performances suggest that perhaps he is happy afterall in North London.

I really hope he stays, especially on recent performances.

Manchester City 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on December 18th, 2007

I must say I’m absolutely delighted with Spurs’ win at Manchester City in the League Cup. Every player battled for the full 90 minutes, and this was even when we were down to 10 men!

Spurs went ahead through Jermain Defoe – who was in for Darren Bent, who has a hip injury. The build up was patient, with neat passing moves. A defence splitting pass came to Aaron Lennon who crossed for Defoe to tuck home.

The sending off of Didier Zokora was a very bad decision by Steve Bennett. It was not even a foul. The City player didn’t even have to jump to avoid the challenge! This said, I think eventual match winner Steed Malbranque was later lucky to just get a yellow card for a two footed challenge.

Goalscorer Defoe came off and in came Teemu Tainio.

As you can guess, Spurs were up against it with just ten men. But they kept battling and fighting for each other. Spurs’ defence was solid – yes solid. Berbatov – who was obviously up front on his own – was outstanding as he used his sublime skill to try and retain possession and perhaps even build something.

City did have shots, but they found Paul Robinson in fine form. He made some fantastic saves, for example, a header from Rolando Bianchi, which Kaboul kicked off the line.

As City tried to equalise Spurs always looked dangerous on the counter, with that, Malbranque made it two-nothing, as he latched on to Jamie O’Hara’s wonderful long range pass, got passed Richard Dunne’s challenge, got through on the ‘keeper, and slotted home.

Berbatov could have made it three in the 89th minute, but despite great skill to get himself into the box, his tired shot at the ‘keeper was saved.

All the player’s deserve a big pat on the back. I think a mention should be given to Aaron Lennon, who seems to be getting back to his old self. He’s also working hard and tracking back, which is good to see. Also Tainio’s performance at right-back was great, considering he’s a midfielder, he did very well, and made some very important interceptions.
