No Arshavin move to Spurs, again

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on August 30th, 2008

Zenit St. Petersburg manager Dick Advocaat says Andrei Arshavin will not be joining Tottenham Hotspur.

The Dutchman said: “The door’s closed, the deal’s closed.

“Tottenham offered £16m and that’s not enough, so that’s the end of it.”

He added: “They [Spurs] had several weeks of time to buy him and they did not offer £22m like everybody has been writing, but just £16m.

“I think that Arshavin costs more than £16m.”

Considering a proven Premiership player in Robbie Keane was sold for £18m, paying more than £16m for an unproven player at Premiership level is crazy. Spurs should move on if the Russians aren’t willing to negotiate.

Woodgate critical of Berbatov

Posted by Stevio in Miscellaneous on August 30th, 2008

Spurs defender Jonathan Woodgate has slammed striker Dimitar Berbatov for his recent behaviour.

The England international told The Sun: “What he’s done doesn’t give out a great message to the supporters, if I’m honest.

“The boys are working twice as hard for each other. If it was me, I would do it differently.

“I would work hard for the club up until I actually left. I’d still be playing until I was leaving.

“Even if I didn’t want to be somewhere I would still give 100 per cent because that’s the way I was brought up.”

Ginola: Sell Berbatov

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on August 29th, 2008

Former Spurs star David Ginola thinks Spurs should allow striker Dimitar Berbatov leave White Hart Lane.

The Frenchman said: “The problem for Berbatov is that he is playing for Spurs and they are not fighting for the title. They are not fighting for any place in the Champions League.

“He is a young player who has propositions from big clubs and he wants to play at the top.

“Players have more freedom nowadays. There is no point asking a player to play for you if he is not happy.”

United manager less optimistic over Berbatov move

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on August 29th, 2008

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson doesn’t appear too happy with the way things are going in his attempts to sign Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov.

The Scot said: “I’m less optimistic today. I’ve no idea what is going on.

“It is hard to communicate with some people in this life. We just have to get on with it.”

Perhaps they should finally cough up the £30m asking price, then I’m sure communications would be crystal clear.

Wigan Athletic manager Steve Bruce says he’s yet to hear from any club interested in signing striker Emile Heskey.

Spurs had been linked with a £10m move for the 30-year-old England international.

The ex-Manchester United defender said: “It would take a hell of an offer to let him go but I’ve not heard anything from anyone and I don’t envisage anything happening at this late stage.”

Pavlyuchenko set for Spurs move

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on August 27th, 2008

Spurs could finally be set to land a striker with Spartak Moscow’s Roman Pavlyuchenko apparently close to joining.

The Russian international said: “I can confirm I’m joining Spurs. Right now I’m getting my visa and as soon as it is ready I will fly to England to sign a contract.

“Everything has happened very quickly so I could not even say goodbye to my team-mates.”

He added: “I could not decide if I wanted to go to England at first – first yes, then no.

“The only thing that stopped me from leaving was my family. But now all doubts are behind me and I decided to sign a contract with Tottenham and the formalities are practically settled.”

Dimitar Berbatov

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on August 26th, 2008

I’m getting fed up with reading about Dimitar Berbatov and every one and their mother saying he should be sold for whatever price Manchester United are willing to pay.

The fact is Berbatov is a world class player, so why should Spurs be bullied and pressured by all and sundry into selling for less than what they’re asking?

If the Bulgarian’s professionalism isn’t to the standard of what a professional footballer should be, then he should be treated accordingly. If that means him being relegated to the Reserves, then so be it.

Berbatov has greatly tarnished his reputation with his actions to get his ‘dream move’. He’s gone from hero to zero in my eyes. I for one will be happy to never see him wear a Spurs shirt again.

Ramos wants Berbatov resolution

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on August 25th, 2008

Spurs manager Juande Ramos wants the situation with striker Dimitar Berbatov sorted.

The Spaniard told The Sun: “We need to get this matter resolved before the transfer deadline.

“If Berbatov goes, we will need time to sign a replacement. We want to have the best centre-forward we can possibly get.

“This is the first time I have faced this problem as a coach and the truth is I have found it a conflicting situation to be in.

“Of course, what has happened has had repercussions on the team and our results.

“Against Sunderland, for instance, we were only able to play with one forward and we didn’t have any substitutes for that player.

“Players go through physical problems all the time but in this case it’s a psychological issue which we have to deal with.

“If Berbatov works well during the week, maybe he will be able to play in our next game. If not, he won’t.

“But we cannot make that decision now. We can only decide that on the eve of the game.”

Bitter Chimbonda makes Spurs return

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on August 23rd, 2008

Whenever a player leaves Spurs, you hope they leave and get on with their careers, instead, some of them just can’t help themselves from having a dig at the manager or the club.

Pascal Chimbonda, now of Sunderland, visits White Hart Lane with his new team today. He said: “The situation at Tottenham is something I have never experienced and it’s not nice being out of the team.

“I wanted the manager [Juande Ramos] to talk to me to tell me what’s happened and tell me why I’m not in the team.

“[Sunderland manager] Roy Keane and Ramos are similar managers but Roy talks more to the players than Ramos did, because of the language barrier. I prefer having a manager like that.”

He added: “I’ve got a new team and I just need to play, I won’t think about Spurs.

“I’ve left but I don’t need to prove anything to anyone. I’m happy at Sunderland and I will just play my football because we’re progressing and can definitely do something big this season.

“Going to Spurs is a big test for us and it will be a good battle but we are capable of winning there.”
