Berbatov worried over Manchester United move?

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on August 19th, 2008

According to The Times, Dimitar Berbatov is worried Manchester United will move for Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar instead of himself.

This comes after United manager Sir Alex Ferguson contradicted himself by now saying he’s looking to sign another striker.

Yesterday he said he was happy to continue with his current strike force.

The Scot told The Sun: “We are working on bringing in another top striker.

“Having added strength up front is a situation I would really enjoy.

“Ideally, I like to operate with four experienced strikers, as we did when we won the Treble when we had Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Solskjaer.”

Meanwhile, Berbatov’s agent Emil Dantchev has said: “We’re entering a crucial period of negotiations,” so perhaps it’s crunch time for the Bulgarian?

Berbatov wants to follow dream

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on August 18th, 2008

Dimitar Berbatov has revealed that he wants to follow his dream, which presumably means him joining Manchester United rather than Barnet.

Berbatov told The Sun: “I’m now in Tottenham but no one can disagree with me wanting to follow my dream.”

On being a substitute on Saturday, he said: “I’m not angry about the decision of Juande Ramos to name me as a substitute. I’m not crying.

“I only show my emotions to my close friends and family.

“But if I was laughing when I was on the bench, people would say I was an idiot.

“I noticed that Eric Cantona never smiled but I don’t know if anyone ever asked him why he didn’t look happier.”

The Bulgarian’s agent Emil Dantchev added: “We have two weeks until the end of the transfer window. I think this will be the most important week.”

Curiously, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said he’s happy with his strike force of Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney.

The Scot said following their 1-1 home draw with Newcastle: “Tevez will be back next week and Wayne Rooney will be much sharper.

“That will be our strike-force. I am happy to continue that way.”

It’s quite clear without Ronaldo, United lack that flair player to unlock defences. Therefore I hope Spurs continue their stance until United agree to pay a price that Daniel Levy is happy with.

Middlesbrough 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on August 17th, 2008

Another opening day away, another defeat.

With the new additions to the squad, the same old problems – we can’t defend.

Playing Didier Zokora at right-back was a strange one when he was needed in the centre of midfield, as I don’t see Jermaine Jenas or Luka Modric as ‘defensive’.

Also Dimitar Berbatov on the bench? He’s our best player regardless of whether he’s been tapped up or not, therefore he should have started alongside Darren Bent.

Ledley King and Gareth Bale were on the bench too. The latter did make an appearance, my only guess is that both players are being brought back into the team slowly after injuries.

Both of ‘Boro’s goals came from crosses.

David Wheater was on hand to get on the end of a saved Afonso Alves shot in the 71th minute following a cross from Stewart Downing.

In the 86th minute, ex-Spurs striker Mido managed to deflect a cross from Didier Digard into the back of the net.

Spurs got one back from a Bentley free-kick, that was headed home by Robert Huth.

Next up is Sunderland at home on the 23rd of August, where five ex-Spurs players return to White Hart Lane. It’ll be interesting to see if there’ll be any improvement – and new signings.

According to The Sun newspaper, Dimitar Berbatov has asked for a transfer.

A reported close friend of the striker’s told the newspaper: “Dimi’s decided to put in a transfer request.

“He can’t wait to go to Old Trafford and play for United.

“He feels he behaved professionally throughout this period.

“He has never spoken publicly on the situation out of respect for Tottenham.

“But he does not want to miss out on the start of United’s season and he feels that was his only option left.”

The Sun also report that Berbatov will be a substitute for the match at Middlesbrough.

Spurs manager happy for Berbatov to stay

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on August 11th, 2008

Tottenham Hotspur manager Juande Ramos says he’d be happy for striker Dimitar Berbatov to stay at White Hart Lane.

The Bulgarian international has recently been repeatedly linked with moves to Manchester United.

The Spaniard said: “I can’t say whether Dimitar is happy or not – I just know that I would be very happy to keep him here.

“I would be absolutely delighted if Berbatov was still at the club after the end of the transfer window and I really hope that is the case.

“He is a magnificent player and we want to enjoy another season of him at this club.”

On possible new signings, he added: “The window closes on August 31 so anything can happen before then.

“Players might come in and players might leave, it is all possible.”

Manchester United end interest in Berbatov?

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on August 11th, 2008

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he’s now looking elsewhere for a striker after failing to agree a fee with Spurs for Dimitar Berbatov.

Ferguson said: “There is nothing at all to say about Berbatov. We’re looking at options elsewhere.

“We’d like to add to our squad and we’re making moves in that direction. We’re trying.

“There’s an issue with scoring goals at the moment but if you’re making as many chances as we are, we shouldn’t worry about it because players will come back and we will eventually add to the squad.”

Sir Les worried over striker departures

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on July 26th, 2008

Les Ferdinand has revealed his concern about Spurs’ possible lack of goalscoring this season.

The former Spurs striker said: “As a former player and a fan it worries me because all we hear about is the big players like the Berbatovs and the Keanes perhaps leaving and we are not hearing about replacements.

“I don’t think they can afford to sell both of them. If they both leave then Spurs are left with Darren Bent. I do think Darren is a good player but his career hasn’t started off well at Spurs.

“If you lose those two players you are losing 40-odd goals a season. How do you replace that? We don’t even know who Ramos is thinking about.

“I do like the new manager and I think he has some great ideas but it just worries me at this stage that there is not more positivity coming out of Spurs instead of negativity.

“He may have some strong ideas and may need the Keane and the Berbatov money to be able to go out and get who he wants but they won’t be proven in the Premier League when these two are.”

He added: “I have got to be honest, I would prefer to see the two front boys not go rather than bringing in anyone else because anyone that comes in will need that settling in period.

“We know how tough the Premier League is. There haven’t been that many strikers who have come in and hit the ground running. Fernando Torres did it, and Ruud van Nistelrooy did it but Roque Santa Cruz and Carlos Tevez needed time as did Dennis Bergkamp. There is no guarantee they will hit the ground running.”

Les, now 41, said of Spurs’ chances of success this coming season: “They could definitely do well in the Champions League straight away.

“Berbatov is a class act and hit the ground running when he first came here. And I have always said about Robbie Keane since he came to Tottenham that he is one of the players I would happily pay to watch.”

On Spurs new boy, Luka Modric, he said: “He looks a really good player but he is 5ft 6ins or 5ft 7ins and he is coming into the toughest league in the world so I would like to see how well he copes with that.

“That is always the question when you bring in foreign players.”

Spurs target Milito, Pavlyuchenko, Bentley and Capel?

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on July 21st, 2008

If the alleged tapped up duo of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane get their wish and join Manchester United and Liverpool respectively, Spurs are, as you would expect, looking to bring in replacements.

According to The Sun, we’re eyeing Real Zaragoza striker Diego Milito. The 29-year-old Argentine would cost £10m and has been recommended by Gustavo Poyet.

Another target could be Spartak Moscow striker Roman Pavlyuchenko. I recall David Pleat referring to him as a similar player to noneother than Teddy Sheringham. The 26-year-old’s club are said to want £15m.

The paper also say we’ve had bids rejected for wingers David Bentley and Diego Capel of Blackburn Rovers and Sevilla respectively. Bentley would cost £17m and Capel possibly £15m.

United manager denies Berbatov quotes

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on July 19th, 2008

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson denies making comments regarding his attempts to sign Dimitar Berbatov.

Ferguson said: “I don’t know where they got those quotes from, it wasn’t from me.

“It’s going to be very embarrassing for Spurs because the complaint appears to be on the basis of a story in a paper.”

He added: “It’s embarrassing for them but you know what Daniel Levy is like. He’s different.”

I’m not sure if Ferguson actually read the statement, but it does appear that Spurs have more evidence regarding this situation, therefore it will be interesting to see which club will be left ‘embarrassed’.
