Palace chairman continues Bostock rant

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on July 10th, 2008

Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has continued his slating of the Football League tribunal for their valuation of youngster John Bostock.

Jordan told BBC Sport: “I use the word scandalous – it’s a panel of halfwits.

“And while I wouldn’t want to waste my breath giving advice to John, look at Wayne Routledge. He took the chance to join Spurs, but where is he now?”

He continued: “When Spurs came knocking I told Wayne to stay and learn his trade at Palace.

“But he went, he grabbed the money, and now he’s at Villa not getting in the first team, just like he didn’t get in the Spurs team, just like he didn’t get in the Portsmouth team and just like he didn’t get in the Fulham team.”

Back to Bostock, Jordan said: “We thought about a valuation – a reasonable one in our eyes, having looked at the benchmarks – of £2m up front, £500,000 more when he signed his first professional contract, and another £2m when he had made 40 first-team appearances.

“If you make 40 first-team appearances for Spurs in midfield, you are a £15m-£20m player, not £4.5m so we were extremely reasonable and far from over-zealous.

“Look at Aaron Ramsey. He is 17, played 17 games for Cardiff last season, and Arsenal have just paid £5m for him.

“The tribunal valuation clearly doesn’t reflect the transfer market. Their reasoning was that their previous highest valuation was £400,000 for Jermain Defoe seven years ago so, in terms of inflation, this is a decent fee.

“Well football doesn’t run like inflation does it? The market now is 10-fold or 20-fold of what it was then.

“What this does is send out a message that academies and youth development policies are not worth investing in because perceived bigger clubs can come along at any time and do what the hell they like.

“It really is making me consider my position in football because the one thing that kept me focused in my time at Palace is producing my own players – but what’s the point?”

Palace chairman hits out at Bostock fee

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on July 10th, 2008

Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan isn’t a happy man after Football League tribunal decided that Spurs should pay an initial fee of £700k for Crystal Palace midfielder John Bostock.

Jordan said: “I feel mugged and brutalised – it is scandalous and this sends a message to smaller clubs.

“Why bother to bring players through if tribunals cannot reflect the work that has gone in?

“You get players like Aaron Ramsey, who has gone for £5million from Cardiff to Arsenal because that is the UK transfer market.

“The tribunal, in my view, are supposed to reflect the conditions of the transfer market place.

“And they came up with a figure of £700,000 for a player who has captained his country at under-17 level, who is perceived to be one of the best youngsters in the country and is being chased by Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea.

“We had a £900,000 offer from Chelsea when he was 14 which we turned down. It’s beyond me and it makes me question why I bother with football.

“I have an academy who have produced a world-class footballer for someone else and got paid two-and-sixpence for it.”

The fee could rise to £1.25m for the 16-year-old.

Sunday transfer rumours

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on June 1st, 2008

A round-up of Sunday’s transfer rumours.

According to the Sunday Times, the fee for midfielder John Bostock will most likely go to tribunal.

The Sunday People say we could offer Aaron Lennon and Hossam Ghaly and £7m cash for Blackburn Rovers winger David Bentley.

Also in the Sunday People, they report if Dimitar Berbatov leaves, we could turn to Real Zaragoza striker Diego Milito.

Same paper say Spurs and also Aston Villa are interested in Sampdoria defender Hugo Campagnaro.

In the Sunday Mirror, Queens Park Rangers could make a move for defender Anthony Gardner.

Again in the same newspaper, there could be a huge clearout with Darren Bent, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Gilberto, Younnes Kaboul, Jamie O’Hara, Paul Robinson and Adel Taarbet leaving.

O’Hara being axed wouldn’t make much sense, as he’s just signed a new deal, also Gilberto was only signed in January.

Bostock on leaving Palace for Spurs

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on May 30th, 2008

Despite there being some confusion over whether an agreement has been made or not between Crystal Palace and Spurs, John Bostock seems quite happy to make the move to the lane.

The 16-year-old told Sportsmail: “I don’t know if Palace fans will ever be able to understand why a genuine Palace supporter left the club, but I was frustrated with the way I was playing under the style of football at the club.

“When I made my debut against Watford, I was ready to commit my future to Palace and could see myself playing a hundred games in no time, but I was stagnating. I need to be at a club where I can continue my development.

“Tottenham have always shown a lot of interest and I believe I will be pushed to improve my game. In the youth team at Palace, it is too easy. Even though most of the players are two years older than me, it is not a challenge. In my last game for the club, against Watford (youth), I scored two and it was just too easy.

“I like Tottenham’s playing style, I will be training with the first team and playing for the reserves in my first season. I could have gone to big clubs, like Chelsea or Barcelona, but Spurs offers me the best career progression. That is my belief.”

He continued: “There has always been the temptation to leave, but my ambition was to become the youngest player to play for Palace and I achieved that. I don’t have any regrets. Palace are going to be rewarded financially for bringing me through the academy system. And rightly so, but it is time to move on.”

Christian Bostock also said: “In the Bible it says that you should put a light on the table so it can shine, not hidden under a bushel where it cannot be seen.

“That played a part in my decision to leave. I can showcase my talent at Spurs. All the pressure I get, I give it to God.”

The youngster praises Palace youth team coach Micky Hazard, who of course had two spells at White Hart Lane from 1978-85 to 1993-95.

Bostock said: “I know people think I have left Palace for the money, but there is another side to this. I don’t think about the money and it never played a part in my decision. People need to understand that I loved playing for Palace. [Micky Hazard was brilliant for my career, encouraging me to do my stuff and really pushing me.

"I owe Micky Hazard a lot. When I broke into the reserves, Dougie Freedman was the coach and he would tell me to do a trick and show what I could do. I enjoyed playing under him.

"My school [the London Nautical] have always been behind me, too, and teachers like Neil McGregor have played a huge part in my development. I am excited about moving to Spurs and playing football in a way that will suit my talents.

“I want to be the best player in the world and I believe I have it. I watch videos of Ronaldinho and Cristiano Ronaldo and believe I can do it. Why should I lower my sights? No one can hold me back. I respect big name players and I admire them, but I’m in the same environment as them now.

“I’ve had emails from supporters telling me they never want to see me at Selhurst Park again, but Palace are my team and that won’t change. I’ve got great memories of the place and if I ever play there, I will go back with my head held high. Neil Warnock gave me my debut and I won’t forget that.”

Crystal Palace youngster set for Spurs?

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on May 30th, 2008

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that they’ve ‘reached agreement’ with Crystal Palace to sign highly-rated midfielder John Bostock.

Spurs’ sporting director, Damien Comolli, told the club’s official website: “We are very pleased that John has decided to join us. We know he has the talent but we also know he is only 16 and so we will not rush him. He will have time to develop and will be working within a very talented development squad.”

Bostock added: “I am definitely ready to make this move and Spurs is the team I wanted to join. I feel this is a club with a great future and this is where I want to be to develop my potential and improve as a player.”

However, Palace denied that a deal had been agreed for the 16-year-old.

The Championship club said in a statement on their official website: “Contrary to reports from Tottenham Hotspur FC regarding John Bostock joining the North London Club, Crystal Palace FC would like to announce that no agreement has been reached for the services of the 16 year old and he is still registered with Crystal Palace Football Club.”

Spurs transfer rumours round-up

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on May 20th, 2008

Spurs have today been linked with quite a few players – as is the norm for the close season.

First off is Lyon striker Loic Remy. It’s unclear who the actual source is, but Sky Sports are reporting it as “it is said”.

Remy is 21 years old and has only made 12 appearances in two years. He must be good!

Another report claims Cruzeiro striker Marcelo Moreno would be interested in a move to White Hart Lane.

Spurs reportedly had a bid knocked back for the Bolivian international.

The striker reportedly told the Brazilian media: “I was told about the offer made by Tottenham. Of course I would like to play in England but as I said before, I have to like the place where I will be. The club has to get to an agreement with my agent and from what I know what has been offered wasn’t enough.”

L’Equipe report that Juande Ramos yesterday met with Barcelona representatives in Spain over the transfer of Samuel Eto’o. Apparently Spurs are willing to pay the staggering asking price of £31m, however, not willing to pay the Cameroon international’s high wages.

Defender Younes Kaboul could be moving to the South Coast after Portsmouth made an enquiry.

Kaboul’s agent Rudy Raba told Setanta Sports: “Portsmouth have called Tottenham. Now we are waiting for Tottenham to respond.”

Finally, according to the Daily Mail, Crystal Palace youngster John Bostock will join Spurs in a deal that could go up to £5m.
