Dos Santos: I will write my own history

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on July 30th, 2008

Giovani Dos Santos says he isn’t looking to be Robbie Keane replacement at Spurs.

The Mexican said: “To replace Robbie Keane is difficult because he’s a player of the highest level. But I have a lot of ambition and I hope to adapt quickly.

“I am not going crazy comparing myself to Robbie Keane or saying that I will do what he did. But I will work very hard to write my own history here.”

Dos Santos has revealed that he asked former Barcelona team-mate Thierry Henry about Spurs.

He said: “When I knew Tottenham was an option for me I asked Thierry Henry ‘what about Tottenham?’ And he told me it would be good for me to come here.”

Modric reaction to Keane departure

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on July 30th, 2008

Spurs’ recent signing Luka Modric says he’s ‘not concerned’ following Robbie Keane’s departure to Liverpool.

The 22-year-old said: “I’m not concerned by Keane’s departure.

“This team has a great ambition regardless of Robbie Keane leaving. Even if Berbatov leaves I’m sure they will find another great player.

“This club really has a great future. We have a lot of positive things.

“I agree the team needs great players but I’m also certain that if Berbatov leaves that they will bring in other phenomenal players.

“I hope that Berbatov stays as he is a great player and he means a lot to the team.

“It is not my area to decide who gets sold. My thing is to play as well as I can possibly can.”

The Croatian international is confident he’ll be a success in England.

He said: “My performance at Wembley is definitely an indicator I can play with the best and cope with them in the Premier League.

“My main ambition is to get used to playing in the team and the way football is played in the English league. As regards the club, the ambition has to be getting in the Champions League.”

Four years ago Modric played with Zrinjki.

On his spell there, he said: “At that time I was 18 and in Bosnia the game is very rough.

“Referees do not spare you. That is why I know I will be able play in the English league.”

Keane on Liverpool move

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on July 30th, 2008

Robbie Keane has spoken following his £18m move from Tottenham Hotspur to Liverpool.

Keane said: “My heroes when I was growing up were Barnes, Aldridge and Rush.

“Now it’s my ambition to be up there with them. And hopefully, with the top players we have around here, I can achieve that as well.

“But Liverpool didn’t have to sell itself to Robbie Keane. It had already done that when I was a kid.

“It was simply too good an opportunity to let it pass. If I hadn’t come now I would have regretted it for life.”

He continued: “As a young lad I didn’t think coming to such a massive club as this was my best move.

“I thought if I went to Wolves there would be a better chance of first-team football straight away. I’m not saying it wouldn’t have happened if I’d come to Anfield then, but I always held out hope that I’d come back and this is a real dream come true for me.”

He added: “As a striker there is always a lot expected of you and that’s understandable. I think I will bring goals, create goals and always work hard for the team.

“The responsibility isn’t something that bothers me. Being captain of the Republic of Ireland, and also at Spurs when Ledley King was out, wasn’t a problem.

“But I’m not coming as an individual who will win the Premier League, it’s about the team and hopefully I will be part of one that does it.

“I certainly do think we can challenge United and Chelsea. If you look at the squad here, along with the addition of a few more, there’s no reason why we should not be challenging for the title.

“Liverpool is a massive, massive club and people expect this of us. The fans expect it and I have come here to win things.

“I certainly have faith in myself and believe I can help the team. That’s why the manager bought me – I want to push on and win more.

“I know I have to earn the right to play for Liverpool but I’m looking forward to doing that. I don’t shy away from challenges and this is a big one.”

On his exit from Spurs, he said: “I don’t think I let Tottenham down. I gave them everything, since day one. The Spurs fans were always magnificent to me and I will always have a place in my heart for them.

“I had six great years at Spurs. There are players leaving but there are also good players coming in.

“I can only focus on Robbie Keane and what is good for me.”

Keane exits Spurs for Liverpool

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on July 29th, 2008

Irish striker Robbie Keane has completed his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Liverpool.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy told the club’s official website: “I was incredibly disappointed when I first heard, not only that Liverpool had been working behind the scenes to bring Robbie to Anfield, but that Robbie himself wanted to go and he submitted a transfer request to this effect.

“I have already made my opinion clear on the nature of this transaction. I don’t regard it as a transfer deal – that is something which happens between two clubs when they both agree to trade – this is very much an enforced sale, for which we have agreed a sum of £19m as compensation plus a potential further £1.3m in additional compensation.”

Spurs have also said that Liverpool have apologised for the way they made their interest in the 28-year-old known. Therefore the official complaint made against Liverpool will now be dropped.

Sir Les worried over striker departures

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on July 26th, 2008

Les Ferdinand has revealed his concern about Spurs’ possible lack of goalscoring this season.

The former Spurs striker said: “As a former player and a fan it worries me because all we hear about is the big players like the Berbatovs and the Keanes perhaps leaving and we are not hearing about replacements.

“I don’t think they can afford to sell both of them. If they both leave then Spurs are left with Darren Bent. I do think Darren is a good player but his career hasn’t started off well at Spurs.

“If you lose those two players you are losing 40-odd goals a season. How do you replace that? We don’t even know who Ramos is thinking about.

“I do like the new manager and I think he has some great ideas but it just worries me at this stage that there is not more positivity coming out of Spurs instead of negativity.

“He may have some strong ideas and may need the Keane and the Berbatov money to be able to go out and get who he wants but they won’t be proven in the Premier League when these two are.”

He added: “I have got to be honest, I would prefer to see the two front boys not go rather than bringing in anyone else because anyone that comes in will need that settling in period.

“We know how tough the Premier League is. There haven’t been that many strikers who have come in and hit the ground running. Fernando Torres did it, and Ruud van Nistelrooy did it but Roque Santa Cruz and Carlos Tevez needed time as did Dennis Bergkamp. There is no guarantee they will hit the ground running.”

Les, now 41, said of Spurs’ chances of success this coming season: “They could definitely do well in the Champions League straight away.

“Berbatov is a class act and hit the ground running when he first came here. And I have always said about Robbie Keane since he came to Tottenham that he is one of the players I would happily pay to watch.”

On Spurs new boy, Luka Modric, he said: “He looks a really good player but he is 5ft 6ins or 5ft 7ins and he is coming into the toughest league in the world so I would like to see how well he copes with that.

“That is always the question when you bring in foreign players.”

The Dutchman said: “Keane has played for many years in the Premier League and he has done really well with Spurs – he’s a massive player for them.

“We all know how well he did for Spurs last season and if he could do the same for us he would be a great signing.

“When you are at a club like Liverpool you expect them to be linked with top players.

“Of course you want players like Keane because they can come in and do a good job.

“It would make competition for places even tougher but that’s the way it should be because it brings out the best in you.”

Spurs target Milito, Pavlyuchenko, Bentley and Capel?

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on July 21st, 2008

If the alleged tapped up duo of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane get their wish and join Manchester United and Liverpool respectively, Spurs are, as you would expect, looking to bring in replacements.

According to The Sun, we’re eyeing Real Zaragoza striker Diego Milito. The 29-year-old Argentine would cost £10m and has been recommended by Gustavo Poyet.

Another target could be Spartak Moscow striker Roman Pavlyuchenko. I recall David Pleat referring to him as a similar player to noneother than Teddy Sheringham. The 26-year-old’s club are said to want £15m.

The paper also say we’ve had bids rejected for wingers David Bentley and Diego Capel of Blackburn Rovers and Sevilla respectively. Bentley would cost £17m and Capel possibly £15m.
