Kaboul departs to Portsmouth

Posted by Stevio in Transfers on August 12th, 2008

Central defender Younes Kaboul has completed his move from Spurs to Portsmouth.

The Frenchman explained his move to his new club’s website, he said: “It wasn’t a difficult choice to make coming here. Everyone in the papers was saying I was going to Sunderland or Aston Villa but I wanted to come here straight away.

“As soon as I knew they were interested I said: ‘I want to come to Pompey’.

“I came here because the manager has wanted me for two years. I met him two years ago when I was at Auxerre and I like the man because he gives you confidence.

“It’s a good opportunity for me because the club has a lot of ambition.

“I think Pompey are a top-five Premier League side and I believe I can achieve what I want to achieve at this club. Hopefully we can get off to a good start.”

He added: “I enjoyed my year at Tottenham and it taught me many things. I’m still young and I made progress but now I hope to make more progress here.

“The players at the club have everything needed to do well this year. Players like Defoe, Distin and Campbell make up a really good side.

“I played with Defoe at Spurs and it’s good to meet up with him again. He always talked to me at Tottenham and helped me to adapt. He told me Portsmouth is a good club to play for.

“There are experienced players like Sol and Sylvain who I can watch and learn from. It can only help me to play alongside them.

“It does mean that there is a lot of competition for places but that’s good – it keeps everyone focused.

“Also, I can play in midfield or at the back – I don’t mind really. The important thing is that I’m here and ready to play.

“I really want to do a good job here.”

Including Kaboul, Portsmouth now have seven former Spurs players in their squad with Noe Pamarot, Sol Campbell, Sean Davis, Pedro Mendes, Peter Crouch and of course, Jermain Defoe.

Three clubs chase Kaboul

The future destination of Spurs defender Younes Kaboul is unclear after Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp revealed his club are no longer favourites to land the Frenchman.

Redknapp said: “I still want to bring in Kaboul but he has spoken with Sunderland. I know Aston Villa also want him.

“I went to see him last year before he joined Spurs, and drank Moroccan tea with his parents. But Roy Keane has met with him now, too.

“I’d say we are third now behind the other two teams.”

Kaboul ponders Sunderland switch

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur, Videos on July 22nd, 2008

Spurs defender Younes Kaboul is considering making the move to Sunderland.

This comes after the Frenchman’s agent, Rudy Raba, recently said: “Younes wouldn’t join Sunderland even if there was an earthquake.”

However, Raba said today: “Younes was very impressed with [Sunderland manager] Roy Keane when he met him, especially with his vision for Sunderland.

“He was also very impressed with the city, stadium and facilities which, to be fair, are second to none.

“Younes also appreciated the fact that Roy and Sunderland have given him a couple of days to make a decision. I now expect him to make up his mind in the next 24 hours.”

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed his interest in Younes Kaboul. He’s also revealed that Aston Villa are keen on the defender.

Redknapp said: “Aston Villa are in for him. I do like him, he’s young but it depends on the fee. If Tottenham buy a few players then everybody has got their price.

“You pay what you think is a fair price if you want somebody. If you don’t pay it then you don’t get them.”

Despite Younes Kaboul unlikely to make the move to Sunderland, it looks as though Pascal Chimbonda could be joining the north-east club.

The Frenchman said: “I can confirm that I travelled to meet Roy Keane at Sunderland’s training ground. I was extremely impressed with what he had to say.”

He added: “His honesty and openness really were fantastic and I particularly like the plans he has for Sunderland Football Club. The opportunity excites me and I hope he was impressed with what I had to say.

“Now it is down to the club to sort out the personal terms and I will wait to see what happens.”

No Sunderland move for Kaboul

Posted by Stevio in Tottenham Hotspur on July 19th, 2008

The agent of Spurs defender Younes Kaboul says the Frenchman won’t be joining Sunderland.

Kaboul’s agent Rudy Raba said: “Younes wouldn’t join Sunderland even if there was an earthquake. We have more interesting options than Sunderland. Don’t even think about it.

“I can tell you for sure that he’s going to stay in England next season. Of course he would prefer to have his chance at Tottenham rather than moving to Sunderland.

“No disrespect to them, but playing there wouldn’t help his international career.”

Sunderland bid for four Spurs players?

Posted by Stevio in Rumours on July 18th, 2008

It’s reported that Sunderland have made a £14m bid for Pascal Chimbonda, Younes Kaboul, Steed Malbranque, and Teemu Tainio.

There’s nothing official at present, however, Sunderland manager Roy Keane said on his club’s official website yesterday that signings are close.

He said: “I’m very hopeful, the players we have targeted have not moved to any other clubs.

“Of course we’d have liked the deals done as early as possible, it would have been nice to have had them in place by now but we just have to put up with it.

“[Chairman] Niall [Quinn] and [chief executive] Peter [Walker] are busy doing the deals and fingers crossed we’ll have some new players in place by this time next week.

“I’m fairly confident that we’ll have one or two new ones here over the next few days, to join us for the second part of our Portugal trip.

“I’m hopeful of getting five of six new faces in by the start of the season.”
